According to UC Sand Diego Medical School professor and researcher Dr. Beatrice Golomb, it appears to be a link between consuming trans fats and memory loss. In recently conducted study, higher consumption of trans fatty acids is linked to poorer performance in memory tests.

This find adds to the already damaging results linked to trans fat, these substances are added to foods to improve the texture, flavor, and preserve them. They have also been shown to lower the “good” cholesterol (if there is such a thing) and raise “bad” cholesterol.

The Results

Data was collected from 1,018 men and women who were given a memory test of word recall. Men aged 45 and younger recalled 86 words on average. That score dropped by .76 words for each additional gram of trans fats consumed daily.  At the highest level of consumption, the men recalled 12 fewer words than those who consumed no trans fats.

Golomb stated that memory loss fits with mechanisms known about trans fats. They are pro-oxidant, meaning they cause damage to cells and cell functions that anti-oxidants protect against, in fact they’re pro-inflammatory.

The Takeaway

Stay away from trans fats as much as possible, they have been linked to poor health conditions and now memory loss. So the obvious next question is, what foods contain trans fats so I can stay away from them? They are explained in more detail in 10 Foods to Stay Away From To Avoid Heart Disease.
